The H2O station was laid out in 1927 as a small drinking hall according to plans by the architects Pfeifer and Grohman for the passengers of the Ruhrschifffahrt directly below the Ruhrschleuse. Since it was built, it has served as a departure point for the ships of the Mulheim White Fleet . In the following years, spell the number of passengers rose steadily, it was rebuilt and enlarged several times.
In 1945 the H2O station was occupied by the British occupying forces and used as a Netherlands Casino . After it was released in 1949, it took on its additional role as a restaurant on Schleuseninsel.
As a special attraction, a flower clock was laid out in front of the H2O station in 1953 .
