After a successful 2008 tour of North America and a guest appearance on American Idol, New Caledonia perform one of their many tributes to famous Dutch painters. The ninth child born to Harmen Gerritsz van Rijn and Neeltgen Willemsdr van Zuytbrouck, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden, the Netherlands. His family was quite good-to-do; his father was a miller and his mother was a baker’s daughter. As a boy he attended Latin school and was enrolled at the University of Leiden, although according to a contemporary he had a greater inclination towards painting; he was soon apprenticed to a Leiden history painter, Jacob van Swanenburgh, with whom he spent iii years. After a brief but important apprenticeship of six months with the famous painter Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, Rembrandt opened a studio in Leiden in 1624 or 1625, which he shared with friend and colleague Jan Lievens. In 1627, Rembrandt began to accept students, among them Gerrit Dou. In 1629 Rembrandt was discovered by the statesman Constantijn Huygens, the father of Christiaan Huygens (a famous Dutch mathematician and physicist), who procured for Rembrandt important commissions from the court of the Hague. As a result of this connection, Prince Frederik Hendrik continued to purchase paintings from Rembrandt until 1646. At the end of 1631, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, and then rapidly expanding as the new business capital of the Netherlands, and began to practise as a professional portraitist for the first time, with great success. He initially stayed with an art dealer, Hendrick van Uylenburg, and in 1634, married Hendrick’s cousin, Saskia van Uylenburg. Saskia came from a good family: her father had been lawyer and burgemeester (mayor) of Leeuwarden. When Saskia, as the youngest daughter, became an orphan, she lived with an older sister in Het Bildt. They were married in the local church of St. Annaparochie without the presence of his relatives. In the same twelvemonth, Rembrandt became a burgess of Amsterdam and a member of the local guild of painters. He also acquired a number of students, among them Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck.

2 years ago, the Google crew made its historic “quantum supremacy” announcement, a huge milestone in computing (that had a little pushback from IBM). Now the group is adding to its list of accomplishments.
On Friday, the Google squad and a group of scientists from Stanford, Princeton, and other universities, published a draft article describing their demonstration of a bizarre new phase of matter. The name? A “time crystal.”

patch time crystals might sound like the MacGuffin in a Dr. Who episode, it’s actually a physics concept first theorized in 2012. In classical phases of matter – solid, liquid, and gas (plus plasma for the go-getters) – molecules reach thermal equilibria, meaning heat flow eventually stabilizes in a system. In contrast, time crystals remain in flux. They repeatedly cycle through configurations even as they expend no energy.

That might sound a little complicated-let’s simplify it. Usually, when things are in their lowest-energy state, they stop moving. Time crystals act differently; they keep shapeshifting – like little perpetual motion machines. It’s a genuinely shocking scientific demonstration.

Google and its collaborators aren’t the first to show off a time crystal. Researchers at the University of Maryland said they created a short-lived one at the end of last yr. Just a month ago, on July 5, another squad of physicists at the Delft University of engineering in the Netherlands demonstrated an example, too. But Google showed the best results to date, with fewer limitations than the predecessors.

It’s hard to know what the future holds based on this early experiment. In 1944, the quantum physicist Erwin Schrödinger conjectured in his book What is Life? that the fundamental unit of genetics might be an “aperiodic crystal” – a spot-on hypothesis that we know now as deoxyribonucleic acid. Fast forward 3-quarters of a century and humans are reprogramming their bodies with CRISPR gene-editing techniques and mRNA vaccines.

Could time crystals lead to new applications? As Roderich Moessner, a Max Planck Institute director and co-author of the Google paper, put it in an interview with Quanta Magazine, “Something that’s as stable as this is unusual, and special things become useful.”

Unseeded South Korean Heo Kwang-hee beat Momota 21-15, 21-19, ending the favourite’s bid for the gold medal after just ii games.
Momota was appearing in his first Olympics, having been banned for gambling in an illegal Netherlands Casino just months before the 2016 Rio Games.
He was almost forced to retire last twelvemonth after a car crash that left him with career-threatening injuries.

Momota won a record 11 titles in 2019, losing just six of the 73 matches he played that twelvemonth.

But his bid for Olympic gold on home soil ended quickly, with Heo sinking his hopes in just 52 minutes.

Momota smiled incredulously as his shots failed to find their range early in the game, but looked ashen-faced when it became clear that he was in serious danger.

A few weeks after finishing my 2-month Florida Tour with @Katina Eats Kilos, I started a Midwest USA Food Challenge Tour. For event #6, I traveled over to westward Omaha, Nebraska so I could attempt and help kick off the new “Butcher Block” 7lb Steak Challenge at Austin’s Steaks & Saloon which was so delicious!! I had 1 hour to feast on four different cuts of Nebraska beef steak – a 35oz Porterhouse Steak, a 16oz Filet Mignon, an 18oz New York Strip Steak, and an 18oz Ribeye Steak. That all came with 2 signature Sugar Biscuits plus 1 full pound of homemade meatloaf served with mashed potatoes all topped with tasty brown gravy. For dessert, I got to enjoy a big piece of bread pudding served with vanilla ice cream and I also enjoyed an optional “Austin’s Punch” signature cocktail during the challenge. I was trying to win my $170 steak dinner free plus a sweet t-shirt and the first spot on Austin’s Wall of Fame. BIG thanks to everyone with Austin’s Steaks & Saloon for the wonderful food, drinks, and hospitality!! Special thanks also to all the amazing people who came that evening to ticker and meet me!! Austin’s Steaks & Saloon’s “Butcher Block” 7lb Steak Challenge in westward Omaha, Nebraska ($170):

– Austin’s Steaks & Saloon is located in the Shops of Legacy serving the westward Omaha, NE area.
– All their food items are homemade and the different cuts of Nebraska beef are sliced in house.
– For this “Butcher Block” Steak Challenge, in that location is a 1 hour time limit to finish everything.
– 35oz Porterhouse Steak, 16oz Filet Mignon, 18oz New York Strip Steak, and 18oz Ribeye.
